The University of Macau (UM) said in a statement on Tuesday that students from its Henry Fok Pearl Jubilee College (HFPJC) participated in an eight-day service-learning programme at the Congjiang No. 4 Primary School in Guizhou province to provide customised courses to its primary students.
According to the statement, the team was led by HFPJC Associate Master Vivian Jiang Yi and Resident Fellow Sara Chang Kit Peng. The team had “extensive communication” with the primary school to understand its students’ needs and developed customised courses, covering topics including English, hygiene and safety, as well as Macau’s history and culture, the statement noted.
Various extracurricular activities, cultural performances and booth games to celebrate Children’s Day were also prepared, the statement said, adding that the teaching activities were well-received.
Moreover, the primary school’s Principal Ding Banghao gathered the school management team and several teachers for an in-depth discussion with the HFPJC students, those of whom shared their experiences and thoughts on the programme, while the school’s teachers answered questions based on their teaching experience, the statement noted.
The statement added that the HFPJC team also visited 14 families of Miao and Dong ethnic minority students to learn about their customs.
The HFPJC has been organising service-learning activities annually since 2014 “to provide volunteer teaching services for underprivileged children in remote areas” in the mainland, according to the statement.
The statement underlined that nearly 200 HFPJC service leaders have visited different mainland provinces and taught over 400 classes in 13 schools, as well as provided creative courses to over 20,000 primary and secondary school students since 2014.
