An “honoris causa” lecture featuring keynote speaker Prof Shuji Nakamura, who won the 2014 Nobel Prize in Physics, is slated to take place at the University of Macau (UM) on August 2, according to a UM statement on Friday.

Nakamura received a Doctor of Science honoris causa degree from UM in 2020, the statement noted.

During the lecture titled “Background Story and Development of High Efficiency Blue InGaN LEDs and Laser Diodes”, the statement said that Nakamura will talk about his experiences, challenges, and solutions in inventing “high efficiency blue LEDs and laser diodes”, as well as their future applications.

Nakamura is an expert in electronics and photonic materials, and is one of the pioneers in “conversion of electrical energy into light energy”. The statement added that he is widely recognised in the industry and academia for his “inventions that have enabled people around the world to enjoy more affordable electric lighting applications”.

The statement said that Nakamura joined the University of California, Santa Barbara (UCSB) in 1999, where he is currently the Solid State Lighting and Energy Electronics Centre’s Research Director and the Solid State Lighting and Display’s Cree Professor.

Nakamura, according to the statement, is the recipient of many awards and holds over 200 patents in the US and more than 300 in Japan, and has published over 550 papers, the statement noted.

The lecture, which will be held in English, will start at 11 a.m. in the UM Guest House’s (N1-G014) Multi-function Hall. Those interested can register at https://isw.um.edu.mo/evm/register/HDL20230802.
