On Saturday, the Macau Jazz Promotion Association (MJPA) hosted the “Zé Eduardo Jazz Masterclass Presentation Concert” at the Orient Foundation. The event featured Portuguese jazz musician Zé Eduardo’s students playing in different combos and was attended by the head of the Orient Foundation, Catarina Continelli, and the Consulate General of Portugal in Macau and Hong Kong, Alexandre Leitão. The chairman of MJPA, Mars Lee Siu Hong, expressed his gratitude for their support.
The first performing group played two early jazz tunes, “Sweet and Slow” and “Everybody Loves My Baby.” Eduardo introduced his beginner students and explained that early jazz tunes are more accessible for newcomers, but they can be equally difficult to master compared to more intricate contemporary tunes.
The second performing group played more complicated tunes, including one of the most popular jazz standards, “All of Me.” The highlight of the night was the Zé & Gregory Duet, featuring Eduardo himself on the double bass and local trombonist Gregory Wong Weng Hou. Eduardo introduced Wong as the first Macau brass player to obtain a master’s degree in jazz. The Macau Post Daily also published an interview with Wong on January 11.
The final group featured the teachers of MJPA playing some jazz classics and contemporary tunes. Eduardo praised their skills and said they have become accomplished musicians in their own right,. Their music and solos earned thunderous applause from the audience, making it an eventful night. Last Wednesday, The Macau Post Daily published an interview with Eduardo, adding to the excitement surrounding the event.
