A mainland man has been arrested for allegedly stealing HK$15,000 in cash from a woman while she was taking a shower, after she had invited him to herhotel guestroom, Public Security Police (PSP) spokeswoman Cheong Im Sim said at a regular press conference yesterday.

The 36-year-old suspect surnamed Li told the police that he’s jobless.

According to Cheong, the female victim in her thirties met Li when she was gambling on Friday in a casino in the city centre and they went to gamble together the next day, after which the victim invited him to her hotel room on Saturday night.

About an hour later, Li left alone while the female victim was showering, and the victim later discovered that HK$15,000 in cash had vanished. She then reported the case to the police.

Li was intercepted at 7 a.m. on Sunday near the hotel where the incident occurred with the help of the citywide CCTV surveillance system. He denied committing the crime.

Li has been transferred to the Public Prosecutions Office (MP), facing a theft charge, according to Cheong.
