Macau’s Civil Protection Operations Centre (COPC) and its counterparts in Zhuhai have set up a mechanism to prepare for this year’s typhoon season, according to Taipa and Coloane Community Service Consultative Council member Leong Chon Kit, who quoted officers of the Unitary Police Service (SPU), Macau Customs Service (SA), Judiciary Police (PJ), Fire Services Bureau (CB), Public Security Police (PSP) and the Macau Public Security Forces (FSM) as saying during a closed-door meeting yesterday that during the operation of the mechanism, relevant information such as traffic and road conditions will be issued at border checkpoints in Zhuhai to visitors planning to enter Macau.

Leong made the remarks during a press briefing after the government-appointed regular meeting at the Islands District Public Services Centre in Seac Pai Van in Coloane.

In addition, according to Leong, during typhoons, PSP officers will be dispatched to the city’s public transport hubs and the six border checkpoints to notify visitors of the nearest emergency shelter.

According to Leong, attending yesterday’s meeting, the officers introduced the COPC hotline 113 which was put into operation on May 1, with 24 lines being available for the public when the No.8 signal is up.

Meanwhile, the council’s Deputy Convener Choi Seng Hon quoted the officers as pointing out that in the first half of this year, the COPC had held 32 community seminars and 43 on-campus lectures targeting the preparatory works for the typhoon season, totalling 30,000 participants. At the same time, the COPC organised 37 group and student visits to its centre, comprising about 1,100 participants.
