The construction of a link between the University of Macau (UM) campus on Hengqin Island and the Macau-side checkpoint zone of the Hengqin joint border checkpoint has been completed, Macau Public Works Bureau (DSOP) has announced.

Construction of the link between the UM campus and the Hengqin checkpoint got off the ground in December 2021. A DSOP statement on Monday announced that the project was completed earlier that day.

The new link will be used for both vehicles and pedestrians.

The pedestrian passage on the link is equipped with a roof, the statement said.

The statement noted that the new link will enable pedestrians and vehicles to travel from the UM campus to the Hengqin checkpoint more directly, a change from the current situation in which they have to travel to Cotai via the underwater tunnel between the UM campus and Cotai first, only after which they can travel to the Macau-side checkpoint zone of the Hengqin checkpoint via the Lotus Flower Bridge.

The statement also noted that vehicles from the UM campus can also use the new link to travel to the Macau-side checkpoint zone of the Hengqin checkpoint, from where they can then travel to Cotai via the Lotus Flower Bridge, a change from the current situation in which vehicles can only travel between the UM campus and Cotai via the underwater tunnel.

Jurisdiction over the new link was transferred from Guangdong to the Macau Special Administrative Region (MSAR) on Tuesday. However, its operational start is yet to be decided by both sides.
