During the ongoing Summer FISU World University Games 2023 in Chengdu, Macau won a bronze medal in the wushu competition yesterday.

The medal was won by local Sanda (散打) practitioner  Cai Feilong who defeated his South Korean opponent Jo Sanghun 2:0 in the men’s 80 kg quarter-finals.

As Cai withdrew from the semi-finals due to injury yesterday afternoon, he tied for third place with Uzbekistan’s Azizbek Isroilov.

Wushu is the collective term for martial arts, while Sanda (“free fighting”) is the official Chinese kickboxing full-contact combat sport, according to Wikipedia.

After being postponed twice due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the 31st edition of the international multi-sport event – organised for university athletes by the International University Sports Federation – kicked off last Friday and will end on Tuesday.

Macau’s athletes have so far won one gold, three silver and three bronze medals.
