Sports Bureau (ID) President Pun Weng Kun told the media yesterday at the ID headquarters in Zape he was confident that local racers would “actively” participate in this year’s Macau Grand Prix (MGP) slated to take place in November, reaffirming that the bureau was glad to continue to support local racers to compete in the annual motor-racing event.

According to Pun, who made the remarks after a press conference about the traffic arrangements during the upcoming repaving of the Guia Circuit, in order to continuously encourage local drivers and riders to join the upcoming races, the bureau will provide them with resources that are basically similar to last year while, at the same time, improving the relevant procedures.

Pun pointed out that there was a “strong” participation by Macau drivers in racing trials in the mainland to qualify for the 70th Grand Prix.

According to Pun, the preparatory work for the Grand Prix, which will be held on November 11-12 and November 16-19, is progressing “smoothly”, tightening up the schedule.

Commemorating its 70th anniversary this year, Pun said he believed that every racer, especially local ones, will eagerly sign up for the races.

With the return of the Formula 3 World Cup in Macau this year, Pun said he believed that the world’s top drivers will be attracted to compete in the races and strive for a good performance. Pun said he expected the number of foreign drivers competing in the Grand Prix to be similar to that before the COVID-19 pandemic, i.e., before 2020.
