Three local artists are showcasing their works at Sands Gallery for the “Behind the Forms: Aesthetics of Contemporary Art – Trio Exhibition by Lei Ieng Wai, Leong Chi Mou and Lai Sio Kit” until October 15.

The permanent art space has had seven art exhibitions that featured mainland Chinese and international artists since opening in 2022. The current exhibition, themed “Forms”, is hosted as an exhibition in support of Art Macao: Macao International Art Biennale 2023.

A recent Sands China statement said that the exhibition is curated by Macau University of Science and Technology (MUST) Faculty of Humanities and Arts’ Assistant Professor of Fine Arts, Leong Kit Man, and is divided into three sections showcasing each artist’s work with different themes.

Lei Ieng Wai, who is the vice president of the Macau Youth Art Association, demonstrates “virtual spectrums on canvases filled with gorgeous colours and frequencies”, according to the statement, and uses light as his theme. His work has been displayed in different parts of the world.

With “Time” as his theme, Lai Sio Kit, who has held over 17 solo exhibitions and had his work displayed in the mainland, Portugal and the US, among others, showcases his work through “telling stories of a city through distressed tiles, the statement noted.

The statement pointed out that Lai is a member of the Chinese Artists Association, vice-director of the Macau Artist Society, director of the Macau Art Master Association, and director general of the Macau Youth Art Association.

Full-time artist Leong Chi Mou, meanwhile, has visualised how people “endow real value onto circulating currency” through his “Alchemist Project” series. He is the founder of “CHI-MOU ESTUDIO”, the statement added, and is a member of the Macau Artist Society and the Macau Youth Art Association.

Sands China President Wilfred Wong Ying-wai was quoted in the statement as saying that through the exhibition, the three artists “show their memories of their homeland, their feelings for their country, and their passion for art through their unique artistic techniques, and demonstrate the profound cultural heritage of Macau. These three up-and-coming artists have created their own exclusive visual forms, and together they shape the image of this city that has a 400-year history of East-meets-West cultural integration, presenting a gorgeous feast for the eyes”

The gallery is located on the 6th floor of The Grand Suites at Four Seasons and is open daily from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. More details can be found at https://en.sandsresortsmacao.com/artmacao-2023.html
