BEIJING –The Eastern Theater Command of the Chinese People’s Liberation Army (PLA) conducted joint air and sea patrols and military exercises around the Taiwan island on Saturday, sending a serious warning against provocations by separatist forces seeking “Taiwan independence” in collusion with external forces.
The Chinese mainland’s resolute and strong countermeasures followed the so-called “stopover” in the United States by Lai Ching-te, deputy leader of China’s Taiwan region.
During his “stopover,” Lai once again proved himself to be an out-and-out “troublemaker” through his deeds and remarks, with vicious intent to sell out Taiwan and solicit US support for “Taiwan independence.”
Such provocations will only worsen cross-Strait relations and undermine international order and regional peace. They blatantly violate the international system with the United Nations at the core and the international order underpinned by international laws, and do nothing but harm to Taiwan compatriots.
Stubbornly clinging to the stance of “Taiwan independence” will only push Taiwan to the brink of war and bring disaster to Taiwan compatriots. Opposing and deterring “Taiwan independence” is the most effective way to maintain stability across the Strait.
Faced with perils, the mainland’s resolute and strong countermeasures to punish separatists and their activities are legitimate, reasonable, and necessary.
The moves demonstrate the mainland’s firm determination to safeguard national sovereignty and territorial integrity. They represent the responsibility of protecting the immediate interests of compatriots on both sides of the Taiwan Strait, and the sense of duty to uphold peace and stability across the Strait.
The Chinese mainland is willing to create ample space for peaceful reunification, but will not leave any room for separatist activities aimed at “Taiwan independence” in any form.
Peace or war, prosperity or recession – cross-Strait relations are facing a crucial choice.
By seeking “Taiwan independence” and making provocations, Lai and the Democratic Progressive Party authority run counter to the interests of the Taiwan people and will push Taiwan into the abyss of disaster. – Xinhua
