An 88-year-old local woman was found dead in her flat on Rua da Barra on Saturday, the Judiciary Police (PJ) said in a statement later that day.

Rua da Barra runs from Largo do Lilau (Lilau Square) to the heritage-listed Moorish Barracks.

The woman lived alone.

The statement did not disclose the woman’s surname.

The statement said that as the woman’s family members who were not in Macau at that time had been unable to contact her, they asked her friends in Macau at around 5 p.m. on Saturday to go to her home to check if anything untoward had occurred.

According to the statement, the friends repeatedly knocked on the flat’s door but no-one answered, because of which they asked the residential building’s doorman to report the incident to the police.

Firefighters and paramedics rushed to the scene where they found the woman’s corpse lying on the flat’s living room, after which the Fire Services Bureau (CB) transferred the case to the Judiciary Police for follow-up investigation, the statement said.

Upon preliminary examination of the body, the statement said, PJ officers concluded that the woman had apparently been dead for a long time.

According to the statement, the woman had no injuries that could have been caused by foul play, nor were there any signs of a struggle found at the scene.

The cause of death will be determined by an official forensic examination, the statement said.
