Four motorcycles collided on Sai Van Bridge yesterday afternoon, leaving three riders and a pillion with slight injuries, the authorities said.
The motorcycle-only lanes on the Macau-Taipa Sai Van Bridge have been temporarily closed since Sunday for seven days because of the government’s ongoing project of replacing worn expansion joints on the lanes with new ones.
The special motorcycle lanes are slated to reopen at 10 a.m. on Sunday, August 27.
During the ongoing seven-day temporary closure, which started at 10 a.m. on Sunday, in each direction motorbike riders need to cross the bridge on the other two vehicular lanes, which normally motorcycles are banned from using.
According to statements from the Fire Services Bureau (CB) and the Public Security Police (PSP) yesterday, the crash occurred at around 2 p.m. yesterday when the four motorcycles were travelling from the peninsula to Taipa.
According to the CB statement, the four injured comprise three males and a female aged between 32 and 56, two of them local residents while the other two are non-resident workers (NRWs.
The two locals, both riders, are a 32-year-old man and a 56-year-old woman, while the two male non-resident workers are a 38-year-old rider and his 44-year-old pillion, according to the CB statement.
The quartet, who all sustained slight abrasions, were taken to the private Kiang Wu Hospital or the public Conde de São Januário Hospital Centre for treatment, the CB statement said.
Each direction of Sai Van Bridge has three vehicular lanes, one of which has been designated for motorcycles since August 2012.
Since then, motorcycles have been barred from using the other vehicular lanes on the bridge, except for the ongoing temporary closure of the motorbike lanes during which they have to use the other lanes.
The bridge’s special lanes for motorcycles have been set up to improve the safety of motorbike riders travelling between the peninsula and Taipa.
