The Macao Institute for Tourism Studies (IFTM) said in a statement yesterday that it collaborated with Tsinghua University in Beijing to conduct a 10-day cultural exchange activity on Chinese ceramic intangible cultural heritage and craftmanship, with the activity having taken place from July 31 to August 9, which was joined by six IFTM students.
According to the statement, the activity, which was themed ceramic culture and its traditional craftmanship, was initiated by Tsinghua University Academy of Arts & Design’s Department of Ceramic Design Associate Prof. Wu Haoyu.
The IFTM student group, which was led by Dr Vicky Chen Zhaoyu from the tertiary education institution’s School of Tourism Management, visited the national capital Beijing, Jingdezhen city and Wuyuan county in Shangrao city in Jiangxi province, the statement noted.
In Beijing, the statement underlined, the students visited Caochangdi International Art Village and Tsinghua University, among others, to understand “the creative ways of interpreting artworks and the creative spaces of artists”, as well as the city’s cultural atmosphere.
Meanwhile, in Jingdezhen, aka the nation’s “Porcelain Capital”, the students learnt about the origin and contribution of ceramic culture to the city’s development, and the innovation of ceramic craftsmanship that forms its cultural atmosphere. The students also had a hands-on experience in the different steps involved in ceramic making, and other intangible craftsmanship in the city.
The statement added that the trip also allowed the students to fully appreciate the value of Chinese ceramic culture.
Meanwhile, the statement stressed that this kind of cultural exchange activity is beneficial for both Macau and Jingdezhen “to establish fruitful conversations and exchanges on their respective cultural resources”, while also promoting friendship and mutual understanding between Macau and the motherland, as well as “expanding the influence of Chinese ceramic intangible cultural heritage while attracting more high-quality talents to engage in the relevant field, thus achieving sustainable development”.
