The Cultural Affairs Bureau (IC) said in a statement yesterday that the opening concert of the “Macao Orchestra (OM) 2023-24 Concert Season”, which is slated to take place on September 2, will feature acclaimed South Korean pianist Yekwon Sunwoo under the baton of OM Director Lio Kuokman, who will lead the new concert season as the Music Director and Principal Conductor.
The event, titled “Lio Kuokman and Macao Orchestra”, is set to take place at the Macau Cultural Centre’s (CCM) Grand Auditorium at 8 p.m. on Saturday next week, according to the statement, celebrating the “150th Anniversary of Rachmaninoff’s Birth”.
Sergei Rachmaninoff (1873-1943) was a Russian composer.
The statement noted that Yekwon won a gold medal at the 15th Van Cliburn International Piano Competition, pointing out that this is one of the “most prestigious music competitions worldwide”. He is collaborating with Macao Orchestra for the first time and will present Rachmaninoff’s seminal work, Piano Concerto No. 2, which the statement underlined is “a showpiece noted for its romanticism, rich melodies and techniques that embodies the pianist’s virtuosity and expressivity”.
Lio, the statement added, will lead the orchestra to perform Shostakovich’s Festive Overture, Rachmaninoff’s Vocalise, and Richard Strauss’s Der Rosenkavalier Suite (The Knight of the Rose or The Rose-Bearer).
Dimitri Shostakovich (1906 – 1975) was a Russian composer.
Richard Georg Strauss (1864 -1949) was a German composer.
