A local woman in her seventies has fallen for a “guess who I am” scam and lost a total of 50,000 patacas, Judiciary Police (PJ) spokesman Ho Chan Nam said in a regular press conference yesterday.
According to Ho, in mid-August, the victim received a phone call from a man who claimed to be her acquaintance from their hometown in the mainland. Without suspecting anything untoward, the victim engaged in a conversation with the caller, who requested a loan of 50,000 patacas for “emergency use,” assuring repayment within a few days. Trusting the caller, the victim promptly withdrew the money from her bank account, and deposited it into the account provided by the scammer.
On Friday, the victim contacted her actual male acquaintance and discovered that he had not asked her for a loan. Suspecting that she had fallen victim to a scam, she reported the incident to the police.
