The ‘Sands Performing Arts Programme 2023’ brought 10 top-notch national and international performances to Macau from May to August, which attracted over 11,000 audience members, Sands China said in a statement on Wednesday.

The statement noted that the programme showcased a series of captivating shows, which were the play “The Peony Pavilion,” performed during the final round of the China Theatre Plum Blossom Award competition; the wildly acclaimed and legendary Cantonese opera performance Floral Princess; and Vienna-based quartet Janoska Ensemble’s unique interpretations of classical pieces.

This year’s programme concluded with the dance drama “Poetic Dance: The Journey of a Legendary Landscape Painting”, which was held from last Thursday to Monday at The Venetian Theatre, according to the statement.

Sands China President Wilfred Wong Ying-wai was quoted in the statement as saying: “We are pleased to leverage our diverse resources through the Sands Performing Arts Programme, continually bringing world-class performance art projects from the Chinese mainland, Hong Kong, and Europe, as well as promoting artistic exchanges between Macau and other regions. Our goal is to create a vibrant atmosphere for art appreciation while expanding our audience base, thus laying a solid foundation for the development of Macau’s local creative and cultural industries”.

“By hosting exchange activities with top international artistes during their visits, we also hope to increase local community participation in arts and culture. This helps further solidify Macau’s international image as a cultural destination”, he added.

The activities are aimed at broadening the scope of performing arts in Macau by introducing and promoting premier national local and overseas performing art projects, fully utilising the city’s role as a platform of international exchange, in line with the Macau government’s vision for the integrated tourism and leisure industry, according to the statement.

Moreover, a range of art exhibitions are also presented to guests at Sands Gallery, the statement pointed out, adding that Sands China has organised seven art exhibitions featuring Chinese and international artists since the gallery’s launch in 2022.
