The Public Security Police (PSP) said in a statement on Friday that it had arrested a 30-year-old man suspected of being the driver of a white car in a video clip circulating on social media recently that crashed into a kerb in Praça de Ferreira do Amaral on Friday.
No further personal details of the driver were released.
According to the statement, the driver is a 30-year-old local man surnamed Fong, and he passed the required alcohol and drug tests.
The statement said that the police received a report of a traffic accident in Praça Ferreira Amaral at 11:27 p.m. on Thursday, and found that a white car had hit a kerb on the pavement. The kerb was damaged in the incident.
After investigation, the statement said, the city-wide CCTV system showed that the car involved was heading towards Praça de Ferreira do Amaral from Avenida do Infante D. Henrique, jumping two red lights and undertaking between a car and a bus, thereby causing a collision between his car and the other car. It then turned towards Praça de Ferreira do Amaral and turned into Avenida da Amizade before coming to a stop after it hit the kerb on the pavement.
The case has been transferred to the Public Prosecutions Office (MP), the suspect facing charges of dangerous driving and evading responsibility.
