A man from the mainland has been arrested for choking his female friend and robbing her in her flat after a dispute about who should wash the dishes, Judiciary Police (PJ) spokesman Lou Chan Fai said during a special press conference yesterday.

The 37-year-old suspect surnamed Liu told the police he’s jobless.

According to Lou, Liu visited the female victim’s flat in the northern district for dinner on Monday evening. Lou noted that Liu drank too much during the meal and had an argument with the victim over who should wash the dishes.

Lou pointed out that Liu suddenly grabbed a charging cable and used it to choke the victim. The victim fought back and attempted to call the police using her phone. Upon seeing this, Liu immediately snatched both of her smartphones, worth a total of 18,000 patacas, and fled the scene, prompting her to later report the case to the police.

Police apprehended Liu in a hotel room in the central district later that day and recovered the two phones. Under questioning, Liu admitted to the crime and claimed that the purpose of robbing the phones was to prevent the victim from reporting the incident.

Liu was transferred to the Public Prosecutions Office (MP) yesterday, facing a robbery charge, according to Lou.
