A local man was driving the wrong way down the one-way street near the headquarters of the Public Security Police’s (PSP) Traffic Department on Monday while being banned from driving, a PSP spokesperson said during a regular press conference on Wednesday.

The man was riding a motorcycle in the wrong direction on Estrada da Vitória near its junction with Rua da Fonte da Inveja, i.e., near the PSP Traffic Department.

The spokesperson identified the rider as a man in his forties surnamed Lam who told the police that he is employed as a decoration worker.

Rua da Fonte da Inveja is a short one-way street running from the exit of Guia Hill Tunnel to Avenida de Sidónio Pais.

Estrada da Vitória is a one-way street running from Rua da Fonte da Inveja to an area outside Hotel Royal and Vasco da Gama Garden. The PSP Traffic Department headquarters is located at the junction of Estrada da Vitória and Rua da Fonte da Inveja.

According to the spokesperson, at around midday on Monday PSP officers saw Lam riding a motorcycle in the wrong direction on the one-way Estrada da Vitória, i.e., in the direction of Rua da Fonte da Inveja.

PSP officers intercepted Lam, after which they confirmed that he was riding while banned from driving, the spokesperson said.

According to the spokesperson, the court banned Lam from driving for two months after he jumped a red light in July.

According to the Road Traffic Law, those who drive while being banned from driving commit a criminal offence, namely an aggravated disobedience charge listed by Article 312 of the Macau Penal Code.

According to the spokesperson, Lam has been transferred to the Public Prosecutions Office (MP) for further questioning, facing an aggravated disobedience charge.

The spokesperson said that the police have also fined Lam for driving the wrong way down a one-way street.
