The Municipal Affairs Bureau (IAM) recently received an announcement from the Hong Kong Centre for Food Safety warning that two products – “Almond Milk Original” and “Walnut Milk Original” – manufactured by 137 Degrees in Thailand have been found to contain salicylic acid – a banned preservative in food, urging the public on Friday to cease drinking them while ordering local retailers to remove the products from their shelves and stop selling them.
According to the statement, the one-litre carton “Almond Milk Original” product has its best-before-date of 2023.11.24, while the one-litre carton of “Walnut Milk Original” product has its best-before-date of 2023.11.29.
The statement noted that salicylic acid, which is not a preservative permitted in food in line with Macau’s “Standard for the Use of Preservatives and Antioxidants in Food’ regulation, could cause nausea, vomiting and stomach upset when consuming food containing it.
The statement said that the bureau was highly concerned about the incident, promising that it would continue to prevent the problematic products from entering the market.
