The Education and Youth Development Bureau (DSEDJ) announced in a launch ceremony yesterday that a training programme titled “Youth Science and Technology Village” for non-tertiary education students officially kicked off in order to cultivate local scientific and creative talents.
The ceremony took place at the Macau Science Centre (MSC) in Nape, with the attendance of 100 students participating in the programme, as well as government officials and representatives of science and technology companies.
Recommended by their schools, the programme provides 100 places each year for students with perceived talents in the field of science and technology to participate in a three-year training course, based on three main pillars, namely Computer and Technology Networking; Engineering; and Biology and Chemistry.
DSEDJ Director Kong Chi Meng said during the ceremony he hopes that the programme could give full play to the role of the MSC, local higher education institutions and a number of State Key Laboratories established in Macau, to provide specialised training and to strengthen career planning support for local youths.
China Electronics Corporation (CEC) Deputy General Manager Zhou Jianjun said in a speech that his company has attached great importance to its development in Macau and closely cooperates with the MSC in strengthening industry-academia-research collaborations, as well as promoting the transfer of research achievements.
A student from Tong Nam School surnamed Chu said the programme would teach him a lot about programming and 3D drawing, which would also give him a taste of university life, adding that he planned to study engineering and artificial intelligence (AI) in the future.
Another participant surnamed Ao, who is studying at the Luso-Chinese Vocational School, pointed out that the training programme includes technologies such as AI and chips, and he believed that the programme could help him better prepare to choose his major at university and in his career development.
