A local woman fell for an online investment scam, losing 960,000 patacas, Judiciary Police (PJ) spokesman Lei Chi Hou said in a regular press conference yesterday.
According to Lei, the female victim in her sixties reported to the police last Wednesday that a person had befriended her via a social media app in late August. The victim was then later persuaded by her virtual “friend” to download two applications on her phone to invest in cryptocurrency.
The victim had invested multiple times on the apps since then. Early this month when she attempted to withdraw money from the app, the “customer service” claimed that she was required to pay “tax” and a “processing fee”. She then lost contact with her “friend” – who she had never met in the flesh. Finally realising that she had been scammed, the victim reported the case to the police with an estimated loss of 960,000 patacas
