The Judiciary Police (PJ) said yesterday that its Cybersecurity Centre currently records an average of more than 5,000 cyber-attacks and spying activities on the operators of critical infrastructure in Macau every day, and that it received 49 reports of cybersecurity incidents from operators last year, of which about one quarter were caused by cyber-attacks and the rest by equipment failures.
Judiciary Police Cybersecurity Division Chief Ho Weng Kin made the remarks yesterday when attending a cybersecurity sharing meeting held by CTM at the Galaxy International Convention Centre (GICC) in Cotai.
Ho underlined that the Judiciary Police are planning to put out technical guidelines on cybersecurity vulnerability management, establish and maintain a list of hardware and software assets, identify and assess cybersecurity vulnerabilities, and put forward basic requirements and suggested measures to operators.
Ho also mentioned that the Judiciary Police have completed upgrading the situational awareness system, introducing the police’s latest artificial intelligence (AI) technology to model and analyse abnormal online traffic characteristics, which can improve the efficiency of detecting cyber-attacks.
CTM Commercial Vice-President Ebel Cham Pou I said during the meeting that in the past six months, 23 million cases involving cyber-attacks and false information were detected, adding that many local enterprises cannot build a higher strength network security system due to their lack of network security awareness, or lack of human resources and equipment constraints, which will cause immeasurable losses if the enterprises suffer from network attacks, data leakage or malicious blackmail.
