A 10-year-old local boy was killed and his 59-year-old father injured following a crash and vehicle fire, which occurred at about 8 p.m. on Monday in Zhuhai, according to the Office of Secretary for Security Wong Sio Chak in reply to an email enquiry by The Macau Post Daily yesterday afternoon.

The written reply said that after checking with Zhuhai authorities, it was confirmed that at about 8 p.m. on Monday, in the east-to-west direction of Gongbei Tunnel – a major tunnel leading to the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macau Bridge (HZMB), a semi-tractor truck collided with a car with a Macau-licence plate which had stopped in the tunnel after breaking down, causing a vehicle fire.

According to the reply, the two victims are surnamed Sou, with the father being the car driver.

The reply noted that the boy, who was rushed to a hospital together with his father, died after the treatment to save him failed.

The reply did not mention whether the driver of the other vehicle was injured, nor how serious the older Sou’s injuries are.

This was the first fatal traffic accident in the mainland reported after the implementation of the Northbound Travel for Macau Vehicles at the beginning of this year.
