Four non-resident workers (NRWs) from the mainland have been arrested for embezzling at least HK$20,000 of the receipts of the restaurant where they worked, Public Security Police (PSP) spokesman Leong Chi Seng said during a regular press conference on Friday.
Leong said that the four suspects in their forties comprise one female and three males, adding that the female suspect, surnamed Luo, worked as a waitress, while the male trio, surnamed Wu, Cheng and Chan respectively, worked as chefs.
Leong said that the Public Security Police received a report from the supervisor of a restaurant on Estrada de Pac On in Taipa on Wednesday, saying that when checking the eatery’s CCTV footage, it was found that someone had breached the company’s rules by giving the kitchen staff handwritten orders to prepare the dishes that the guests had ordered.
Upon scrutinising the restaurant’s CCTV footage, Leong said, PSP officers confirmed that in addition to not complying with the restaurant’s rule of entering the clients’ orders into the ordering system of the restaurant’s cashier computer, Luo had also stolen money from the cash register and handed the cash to Wu in the kitchen, whenever the diners had paid for food that had not been recorded in the eatery’s ordering system.
Suspecting that the employees were colluding in embezzling cash from the restaurant, PSP officers took Luo, Wu, Cheng and Chan to a police station for questioning, Leong said, adding that the quartet admitted to having stolen at least HK$20,000 from the restaurant since last month. The four suspects told the police that Luo handed over some of the cash to Wu for safekeeping and sharing the spoils. Luo had received about HK$8,000, while Luo, Cheng and Chan had each received about HK$4,000, Leong added.
The quartet have transferred to the Public Prosecutions Office (MP).
