A local man “fell” from a flat in a residential building next to Praça da Amizade (“Friendship Square”) in the city centre and died upon impact at the scene yesterday afternoon, the Judiciary Police (PJ) said in a statement last night.

The statement said that after receiving a report about a man lying on the square, firemen and paramedics rushed to the scene where they confirmed that the man was dead, after which the Fire Services Bureau (CB) transferred the case to the Judiciary Police shortly after 6 p.m. yesterday for follow-up investigation.

According to the statement, PJ officers confirmed that the man lived in a flat in the residential building next to the square, colloquially known as Sintra Square, and that he had “fallen” from the flat.

The statement said that no suicide note was found in the man’s flat.

A preliminary examination of the body showed that the injuries of multiple fractures were consistent with a fall from a height, according to the statement, which said that there were no suspected criminal injuries on the body.

The statement merely said that the local man was middle-aged and did not provide further details on his personal information.

An autopsy will be carried out to confirm the exact cause of the man’s death, the statement said.
