The Public Security Police (PSP) have fined a cabbie for driving into the pedestrian-only Largo do Senado, the city’s main square, on Saturday afternoon, local Chinese-language media reported.
According to the reports on Saturday, the case occurred at around 2:45 p.m. on Saturday when the cabbie, a 60-year-old local man, drove into the square from Travessa do Roquete, the street situated between the General Post Office and Santa Casa da Misericórdia (Holy House of Mercy), shortly after which he was intercepted by police officers.
Vehicles are allowed to enter Travessa do Roquete, which runs between Holy House of Mercy and Rua da Sé.
Rua da Sé is the street running between Travessa do Roquete and Largo da Sé, where the city’s Catholic Cathedral is located.
According to the reports, the cabbie told the police that when he drove along Travessa do Roquete, he saw the traffic sign reading “no entry for vehicles except authorised ones”, i.e., the sign near Holy House of Mercy, but he decided to drive into the square because “at that very moment” he thought that taxis were also authorised vehicles.
According to the reports, the police confirmed that no pedestrians were hit while the taxi drove into the square.
