The Review of Culture’s (RC) 72nd issue centres on Macau’s cultural identity, highlighting three works that were presented at the 2nd Annual Conference of Macao Studies 2022, according to a Cultural Affairs Bureau’s (IC) statement on Friday.

The conference was organised by the University of Macau’s (UM) Centre of Macau Studies.

The statement noted that the first two articles of the journal, which is published by the bureau and edited by the UM Centre of Macau Studies, respectively discuss Macau’s cultural identity before and after the handover and the changes in the social fabric, through “an analysis of music pieces and cinematographic productions”.

The third article looks at the “colonial feminist theory and the discourse of women in the 19th century” through an analysis of the first American female missionary who visited Macau, the statement said.

The statement added that the jorunal’s historiography column is dedicated to three research works: “From the conquest of Malacca to the beginning of the permanent Portuguese presence in Macau; the rarely-investigated pirates’ Silk Road and its contribution; and the launching of the multilingual bulletin – The Dawn, in the first half of the 20th century in Guangzhou, through the activity of its editor – Tan Malaka”.

Concluding the new issue is a study on Eastern spirituality, religious beliefs, and superstitions, through an analysis of Japanese culture, the statement underlined.

The journal, priced at 150 patacas, can be bought from outlets listed on www.icm.gov.mo/academics/en/sellingBook/. It is also available on IC’s online bookshop on www.icm.gov.mo/bookshop, orders of which can be picked up from one of 13 public libraries while overseas readers will receive their copy from the Macao Post and Telecommunications Bureau (CTT) EMS service.

Moreover, the journal also calls for articles written in Portuguese, English or Chinese, with information available by calling 8822 8131 during office hours or emailing cms.rc@um.edu.mo.
