The Cultural Affairs Bureau (IC) launched an online exhibition titled “Life under a Pen – Online Exhibition of the Centenary Birth Anniversary of Henrique de Senna Fernandes” on Friday, celebrating the 100th year of the Macanese writer’s birth and featuring over 132 exhibits, according to a statement from the bureau last week.

Senna Fernandes was born on October 15, 1923 and passed away on October 4, 2010, according to Wikipedia. He wrote in Portuguese.

The online exhibition, divided into “Life Paths”, “A Tour of Works”, “Life under a Pen” and “Online Reading”, can be viewed on the House of Macao Literature’s website on www.clm.gov.mo, the statement noted.

In “Life Paths”, the lawyer-cum-writer’s daily life is presented through personal and family photographs, among others, the statement noted, while “A Tour of Works” showcases a list of his published works, especially his novels.

Since “Ah-Chan, the Boatwoman” was first published in 1974, Senna Fernandes’ literary works have garnered widespread acclaim, the statement said, with a raft of editions and republications in Chinese and English translations, while some works were adapted for the big screen.

The statement noted that the section “Life under a Pen” compiles excerpts from Senna Fernandes’ works to offer members of the public “a more in-depth understanding of the essence of his works and writing style”, while the final section, “Online Reading”, enables one to read all reviews and works related to Senna Fernandes published in the bureau’s Review of Culture journal.

The online exhibition enables people from all over the world to familiarise themselves with his life and work, gain a deeper understanding of him, and cultivate a deeper appreciation for his “profound literary connotations and cultural cultivation”, according to the statement.

Customarily, the term “Macanese” (“Macaense” in Portuguese) denotes Macau’s residents of mixed Portuguese and Asian descent, as well as the community’s diaspora. Macanese are estimated to account for about 1.5 percent of Macau’s population.
