An exhibition commemorating the birth centenary of Macanese lawyer-cum-writer Henrique de Senna Fernandes (October 15, 1923 – October 4, 2010) is being held at the University of Macau (UM) until December 18, showcasing the writer’s literary works and mementos, according to a statement released by the University of Macau (UM) on Tuesday.

The statement noted that the exhibition is held at UM’s Chinese-Portuguese Bilingual Teaching and Training Centre of the Department of Portuguese in its Faculty of Arts and Humanities (FAH), with the centre hoping that it will enable more people to familiarise themselves with Senna Fernandes and his works, as well as encourage interest in local writers and literature.

Senna Fernandes’ life, including his professional career as a lawyer and literary works, along with introductions, are presented at the exhibition, which also includes portraits of the writer taken by author Yao Feng and an online quiz contest with a chance to win vouchers, the statement added. The statement did not elaborate on what kind of vouchers participants can win.

Senna Fernandes, who wrote in Portuguese, has written several novels and short stories including “A Trança Feiticeira” (“The Bewitching Braid”) and “Amor e Dedinhos de Pé” (“Love and Tiny Toes”), both of which have been adapted for the silver screen, according to the statement. His works mainly depict Macau in the 20th century, portraying aspects such as its history and customs.

The writer has made outstanding contributions to the development of literature and culture in Macau, and is “regarded by many literary critics as a guardian of Macau’s heritage”, the statement said. He was awarded the Medal of Merit – Culture by Macau in 2001 and received a Doctor of Letters honoris causa from UM in 2008.
