The findings of a survey conducted by the Macao New Chinese Youth Association (MNCYA) show that on a scale of 10, the average score of the effectiveness of the government’s talent development measures stands at 4.74 points, indicating that the respondents believe that the effectiveness of the government’s talent development measures needs to be improved.

The street survey was carried out in May, when the association collected 662 valid questionnaires at random from local residents aged between 18 and 44, the findings of which were reported during a press conference yesterday.

According to the findings, only 34 percent of the respondents said they believed that Macau has a sufficient pool of professional talents that have a sense of global vision, creativity and innovation ability, professional knowledge and skills, while 46 percent of respondents agreed that young people in Macau are less digitally literate than in other developed regions.

The findings show that nearly 48 percent agreed that the government should give priority to creating more internship opportunities, and that nearly 39 percent agreed with the government’s continuing education subsidy and scholarships provided for the students.

Chan Chi Weng, vice-president of the association, told reporters during the press conference at the association’s headquarters that the findings indicate that there are shortcomings in the existing talent development policy, especially in the subsidy system for continuing education. Chan also urged the government to encourage enterprises to provide on-the-job skills training for their employees and formulate incentive policies, including tax concessions, special training subsidies, and incentive schemes.
