The Cotai hospital complex has launched recruitment of the first 90 health workers and support staff members, including five general practitioners and 50 nurses.

The registration, which starts today, will run until November 10.

However, according to a statement by the complex yesterday, those hired in the first-phase recruitment will undergo training after the new facility’s trial operation starts in December before they will start working when its official operation starts next year.

The hospital complex in south Cotai will be operated by Peking Union Medical College Hospital. The large-scale health facility is officially known as Islands Healthcare Complex – Macao Medical Centre of Peking Union Medical College Hospital.

“Islands” is the official term referring to Taipa, Coloane and Cotai.

A new law regulating the Islands Healthcare Complex’s management took effect on October 1, according to which the employment of the Cotai hospital complex’s staff members is regulated by the city’s labour legal system for the private sector, rather than by the government’s employment system for public servants.

According to the law, the Macau government will ensure that the operation of the public Islands Healthcare Complex will be sufficiently financed, while Peking Union Medical College Hospital will be responsible for operating and managing the Cotai hospital complex, through its “brand” and medical techniques, in collaboration with the Macau government.

The Macau Special Administrative Region (MSAR) government and Peking Union Medical College Hospital signed a cooperation agreement listing details of the latter’s operation and management of the Islands Healthcare Complex, in Beijing earlier this month. The accord was signed by Secretary for Social Affairs and Culture Elsie Ao Ieong U and Peking Union Medical College Hospital President Zhang Shuyang.

Delivering a speech during the signing ceremony on October 16, Zhang said that the Islands Healthcare Complex will start its trial operation on December 20, i.e., the 24th anniversary of the establishment of the MSAR, before it will officially open on September 16 next year, the 103rd anniversary of the establishment of Peking Union Medical College Hospital.

The Macau government said last month that it was aiming to recruit up to 200 health workers and support staff before the Cotai hospital complex starts its trial operation in December.

Composition of 90 positions

According to yesterday’s statement, the Islands Healthcare Complex is now recruiting 90 health workers and support staff members in the first phase, comprising five general practitioners, 50 junior-level nurses, three pharmacists, six radiologic technologists, six pharmacy technical assistants, 10 nursing assistants, and 10 healthcare navigators.

Potential applicants are required to submit their applications between today and November 10. They can submit their application online on the complex’s website (https://www.cmm-pumch.gov.mo) or in person at the complex’s administration and multi-purpose building.

Details of the ongoing recruitment’s seven position types can be checked at the complex’s website, which is available in Chinese, Portuguese and English.

The healthcare navigator position requires a high school diploma. According to the website, the position’s main duties are to receive patients, provide guidance services, answer basic medical consultations, and provide assistance in resolving complaints. In addition, they will also press lift buttons for patrons and help patients use self-service registration kiosks.

According to the website of the Public Works Bureau (DSOP), construction of the Islands Healthcare Complex’s six buildings in the first phase cost around 9.5 billion patacas. The government said last month that the since the government started the planning of the Cotai hospital project over a decade ago, it had so far spent around 13 billion patacas including building construction as well as the purchase and setting-up of various medical equipment.

According to the DSOP website, the upcoming construction of the project’s second phase, i.e., a rehabilitation hospital, will cost 1.678 billion patacas.
