The National Immigration Administration (NIA) said in a statement yesterday that a car driver attempted to smuggle two live tortoises into the mainland via Zhuhai’s Hengqin checkpoint last week without undergoing the respective inspection and quarantine procedures for the reptiles.
When a car entering Zhuhai from Macau was passing through border control at the Hengqin checkpoint on Thursday last week, the statement said, immigration officers found two live tortoises on the car’s back seat.
According to the statement, the car driver did not declare the two tortoises, neither did he or she undergo the respective required inspection and quarantine procedures.
The immigration officers have transferred the two tortoises to customs officers for follow-up measures, the statement said.
