Public Security Police Deputy Commissioner Leong Heng Hong said yesterday that the iris recognition system at the Barrier Gate Border checkpoint has been well received by the public since its launch last month, and the force is planning to install the system at all checkpoints in Macau next year.

Leong made the remarks yesterday on a current affairs phone-in programme hosted by Ou Mun Tin Toi, the Chinese-language radio channel of public broadcaster TDM.

Leong noted that as of November 3, more than 100,000 people had used the iris recognition system to cross the Barrier Gate border checkpoint, an average of 7,600 people a day.

Currently, a total of 10 channels are equipped with an iris recognition system at the Barrier Gate border checkpoint, which have officially been in use since October 20. Members of the public can register to cross the checkpoint through the iris recognition system when leaving and re-entering Macau.

The iris recognition system service is available during the Barrier Gate border checkpoint’s operating hours from 6 a.m. to 1 a.m. every day, while the on-site registration time runs from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. every day.

According to the force, iris biometric identification technology has higher requirements for users, such as not wearing coloured glasses and cosmetic contact lenses when going through checkpoints using biometric identification technology.
