The Judiciary Police (PJ) have arrested a 37-year-old Southeast Asian male for repeatedly sexually assaulting, coercing and punching his ex-girlfriend in a flat in the city centre since August 22, PJ spokesman Chong Kam Leong said during a special press conference yesterday.

Chong noted that the suspect, a non-resident domestic worker (NRW), is surnamed Sunga. He added that Sunga broke up with his girlfriend in June this year, and later moved out of the flat where both had lived for two years.

Chong said that Sunga kept the flat’s key even after he had moved out and returned to the flat on several occasions, asking his ex-girlfriend to get back together, but to no avail.

Sunga punched the victim’s face on August 22 after his ex-girlfriend rejected him again, but the victim did not report the case to the police at that time. She only did so at 8 a.m. on Friday, when Sunga entered the victim’s home again, Chong added.

A PJ investigation showed that, according to Chong, while the victim was sleeping, Sunga got into the victim’s bed and hugged her and then sexually assaulted and coerced her, even as she resisted his advances. The victim called the police afterwards.

A medical examination showed that the victim had suffered injuries to her chest and knee, Chong added.

Chong said that PJ officers arrested Sunga at his workplace in the city centre on Saturday.

Under questioning, Sunga, whose nationality Chong did not reveal, denied committing the offences.

Sunga was transferred to the Public Prosecutions Office (MP) yesterday, facing charges of sexual coercion, causing bodily harm and trespassing.
