Housing Bureau (IH) Director Arnaldo Ernesto dos Santos died of an undisclosed illness at the private Kiang Wu Hospital, aged 63, yesterday morning, local Chinese- and Portuguese-language media reported.

Ernesto dos Santos had headed the Housing Bureau since January 1, 2016.

Before his appointment as the Housing Bureau’s director, Ernesto dos Santos had headed the now-defunct Energy Sector Development Office (GDSE) since 2005 when it was established.

The Energy Sector Development Office, which was merged with the Environmental Protection Bureau (DSPA) on January 1, 2021, was established in 2005 as a government “project team” tasked with formulating the city’s energy policies, overseeing the sector and ensuring a reliable energy supply.

According to the Official Gazette (BO), Ernesto dos Santos held a bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering from the Technical University of Lisbon. In addition, he also studied in a taught master’s degree programme in Business Science from the University of Macau (UM).

According to the gazette, Ernesto dos Santos worked as an engineer for public broadcaster TDM from 1985 to 2005 where he held various positions such as broadcast services head, technical director, technical director for radio services, and technical and production director.

Ernesto dos Santos also worked as a part-time lecturer in engineering courses at the University of Macau from 1990 to 1996.

Ernesto dos Santos hosted a press conference in late September about the bureau’s current three-month application round for 5,415 subsidised home-ownership scheme (HOS) flats in the Zone A land reclamation area.
