The Macao Occupational Skills Recognition System’s (MORS)* Gold Pin Competition’s final was held at Grand Lisboa Palace (GLP) in Cotai yesterday, with this year’s contest, which had 80 finalists, attracting a total of 345 participants from 38 different institutions.

The competition is joint effort by the Macao Institute for Tourism Studies (IFTM) and the local tourism industry, now in its 20th year, comprises three rounds, with the first-round testing contestants on their knowledge of the MORS training manuals in both written and practical assessments.

Yesterday’s final included categories such as Room Attendant, Bartender, Waiter/Waitress (Chinese Restaurant Service) and Security Officer for the Tourism and Gaming Industry, for which contests were respectively held in bed-making, cocktail mixing, Chinese banquet table setup, and a task activity and first-aid competition.

A culinary art competition for the Western Chef category is also slated to take place at the IFTM Educational Restaurant in Mong Ha on Saturday.

The competition consists of 10 sessions in total.

Meanwhile, the award presentation ceremony is slated to be held at GLP on December 6, with winners receiving a cash prize of 8,000 patacas and a subsidy worth 2,000 patacas each for training courses at IFTM’s School of Continuing Education, in addition to a MORS Gold Pin and certificates.

*MORS, according to IFTM’s website, was launched in 2001 with the support of the European Union (EU). Its main objective is to “upgrade human resources in the tourism industry, through the development of a series of skill standards, training programmes and an assessment scheme for the tourism-related professions”.
