The Judiciary Police (PJ) received five telecommunications fraud reports between last Friday and Monday, involving a total of over 3.847 million patacas.
PJ spokeswoman Lei Hon Nei said during a regular press conference yesterday that the five cases were similar, in which scammers purporting to be officials of local government departments or pretending to be staff members of mainland or Hong Kong telecommunications companies told their victims that their phone numbers had been used to send fraudulent text messages, requiring them to provide personal information to them, including their bank account details.
According to Lei, the five victims had respectively been cheated out of 162,000 patacas, HK$69,440 (71,503 patacas), HK$44,000, 3 million yuan (3.4 million patacas) and HK$552,500.
