The Judiciary Police (PJ) said in a statement yesterday that some members of the public have recently received SMS messages from the “police” asking them to be vigilant about scam calls after receiving what is purported to be a scam call, intending to lead recipients to believe the fake SMS account is from the police.

According to the statement, the fake SMS was sent from an account named “macau.police@icloud.com”, which has nothing to do with the Judiciary Police.

The statement said that the police do not rule out that it could be a new type of scam, where scammers intentionally call the victims using a number not known to the recipient before sending out SMS messages pretending to be the Judiciary Police. The scammers’ apparent objective is to make victims believe that they are genuine “police officers”, so that the fraudsters can continue to contact the victims through SMS messages with the aim of obtaining their personal information and bank account numbers.

The statement said that the scammer even ask the victims to share their phone screen so that they can obtain more information through the victims’ phones.

The bureau was adamant that it did not send the messages and reminded the public to stay vigilant. The statement urged people not to provide any personal information to people they do not know.

The statement noted that those suspecting that they have fallen victim to a scam should call the Judiciary Police’s anti-fraud hotline 8800 7777 or crime report hotline 993 for assistance.
