Secretary for Administration and Justice André Cheong Weng Chon said he hoped that yesterday’s 12th Mainland, Hong Kong and Macau Law Seminar was able to provide strong intellectual support for the development of the nation’s Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) and the development of the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macau Greater Bay Area (GBA).
The one-day seminar was held at the Forum Macao complex near Macau Tower.
The seminar, which was co-organised by the Macau Legal Affairs Bureau (DSAJ), China Law Society, and Hong Kong’s Department of Justice, aimed at discussing legal issues related to the GBA and strengthening exchanges and cooperation among the legal professions of the three places.
Cheong said the objective of the seminar was to explore a raft of different issues such as giving play to the special characteristics of the legal systems of Hong Kong and Macau, and using legal services from Hong Kong and Macau to help the mainland’s enterprises “go global”.
China Law Society Vice President Wang Qijiang said that the focus of the future development of the GBA was to identify the combination and connection points of the legal systems of the three places, so as to effectively eliminate the barriers caused by the different legal and administrative systems between the three jurisdictions. He stressed the main objective should be to render the three different legal systems progressively similar.
Wang suggested establishing a civil and commercial dispute settlement mechanism, and a special international commercial court in the GBA, with judges from Guangdong, Hong Kong and Macau, adding that the China Law Society would continue to promote extensive exchanges and in-depth integration between the legal sectors of Guangdong, Hong Kong and Macau, and strive to further legal cooperation in the GBA.
China’s legal system consists of four different legal and judicial systems – the mainland, Taiwan, Hong Kong and Macau.
