A 56-year-old man has died in hospital after complaining of shortness of breath after a bungee jump from Macau Tower yesterday, according to a Public Security Police (PSP) statement yesterday.

According to the statement, the man was a Japanese national.

The statement said that the Fire Services Bureau (CB) and the Public Security Police received a report of an injured person at Macau Tower at around 4:30 p.m. yesterday.

After firemen arrived at the scene, the man was rushed to the public Conde de São Januário Hospital Centre accompanied by friends, but was no longer breathing and had no heartbeat when arriving at the hospital at about 5:40 p.m.

The statement said there were no surface scars on the man’s body.

The Macau Tower bungee jumps have grown into one of the city’s top tourist attractions since their launch in 2006. Incidents like yesterday’s are understood to have been rare.

The Macau Tower Convention and Entertainment Centre also known as Macau Tower is being used for a variety of adventurous activities. At a height of 233 metres, Macau Tower’s tethered “skyjump” and bungee jump by AJ Hackett from the tower’s outer rim, is reportedly the highest commercial skyjump in the world, and is also the second highest commercial decelerator descent facility in the world, after Vegas’ Stratosphere skyjump at 252 metres, according to Wikipedia.
