Integrated resort operator MGM hosted an art symposium themed ‘From Lines to Pixel’ yesterday at MGM COTAI, along with the unveiling of local artist and long-time MGM collaborator Eric Fok’s (霍凱盛) first digital art piece “Giraffe meets Qilin” at the property’s Spectacle.
Addressing yesterdays around 100 attendees, MGM China Holdings Limited Chairman and Executive Director Pansy Ho Chiu-king said: “As Macau is on its juncture towards further diversification, MGM leverages our international MICE network to introduce ‘Fortune Brainstorm Design Forum’ to Macau, and hosts an art symposium on the same day. Through creating synergy between the two events, it brings together the world’s prominent art and design leaders to spark new inspirations”.
The symposium, moderated by Executive Editor of Shanghai FORTUNE CHINA Wang Fang, comprised Fok, Hong Kong tech-ink artist Victor Wong (黃宏達), who is the recipient of numerous awards, and LAB at Rockwell Group’s award-winning Studio Leader Andrew Lazarow, all of whom have collaborated with MGM on various projects.
Wong is known for his digital art and special effects in movies, and developed the world’s first artificial intelligence (AI) ink artist A.I. Gemini in 2018. The LED screens at the Spectacle, meanwhile, were designed by the LAB at Rockwell Group.
The panel talked about the transformation of traditional art to digital art, how AI can be combined with art, and digital technology’s role in achieving breakthroughs in multi-dimensional experiences
Moreover, for his part, Fok discussed the concept behind his art work, which is displayed across 25 large-scale LED screens, as well as how he overcame the challenge of displaying his traditional 2D art pieces in a 3D space.
Fok, according to an MGM statement provided yesterday, “is skilled at creating intricate antique-style maps with a technical pen incorporating contemporary architecture, and sketching the Age of Discovery as a contrasting backdrop to explore the changes brought about by urban development and globalisation”.
More about Fok’s art next week.
