Two local men have been separately arrested for drunk driving, Public Security Police (PSP) spokesman Leong Chi Seng said during a regular press conference yesterday.

Leong identified the suspect in the first case as a man surnamed Cheong, who is in his fifties and works as a casino dealer.

According to Leong, the police received a report on Saturday at 1 p.m. that a motorcycle had collided with a car in Areia Preta district. Police officers who arrived at the scene found Cheong, the rider, and his motorcycle lying on the ground, and a blood test taken later in hospital showed that Cheong’s alcohol concentration was 3 grammes of alcohol per litre of blood.

Under questioning, Cheong admitted to drinking at home earlier that day. He told the police that he had no recollection of the car accident.

Leong identified the suspect in the second drunk driving case as a 27-year-old local man surnamed Lei. He told the police that he works in a restaurant.

According to Leong, in the early hours of Tuesday morning, police officers discovered that three railings along Avenida de Artur Tamagnini Barbosa had been damaged. Later, the officers came across a car parked nearby, where Lei, the driver, was checking out the front of the vehicle, which had been damaged. Lei confessed that his car collided with the railing, and a breathalyser test revealed an alcohol concentration of 1.12 grams of alcohol per litre of blood. He admitted to consuming alcohol earlier that day.

The suspects have been transferred to the Public Prosecutions Office (MP), facing drunk-driving charges, while Lei also faces a charge of evading responsibility, Leong said.
