A male drug trafficker from Indonesia was arrested at the local airport on Saturday for smuggling 2.5 kilogrammes of heroin, with an estimated street value of 3.6 million patacas, Judiciary Police (PJ) spokesman Lou Chan Fai said at a special press conference yesterday.

The 27-year-old suspect surnamed Dwi told the police that he works as a driver in his home country.

Dwi, flagged as a potential drug courier, was intercepted by the Judiciary Police upon his arrival in Macau from Bangkok. Police officers discovered 2.5 kilogrammes of heroin, with an estimated value of 3.6 million patacas, concealed in hidden compartments in his backpack, wrapped in tin foil and reflective sheets.

Under questioning, Dwi told the police that he had been invited by an Indonesian friend on a free trip to Thailand. After spending a few days in Bangkok, he received US$400 (3,220 patacas) from an individual who instructed him to transport the backpack to Macau. Dwi denied any involvement in drug trafficking, claiming that he had no knowledge of the illicit contents, Lou said.

Dwi was transferred to the Public Prosecutions Office (MP) yesterday, facing a drug-trafficking charge.

Evidence seized from the drug suspect from Indonesia including a backpack, smartphones, drugs and bank notes is shown during yesterday’s special press conference at the Judiciary Police (PJ) headquarters.
