Macau donated 30 million patacas to support Gansu and Qinghai provinces that were struck by a 6.2 magnitude earthquake last week, according to a Macau Government Information Bureau (GCS) statement on Saturday.

On December 18, a 6.2-magnitude earthquake struck Jishishan in Gansu’s Linxia Hui Autonomous Prefecture, resulting in significant casualties and damage to infrastructure in Gansu and Qinghai, the statement said.

Chief Executive Ho Iat Seng expressed his condolences and declared the local government’s readiness to support the provinces affected by the earthquake, as well as their reconstruction efforts, the statement said.

The Macau government will closely follow up on the progress of the relief efforts, and maintain communication with relevant mainland departments, the statement said.

According to the statement, the local government firmly believes that the leadership of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Gansu Provincial Committee and the leadership of the CPC Qinghai Provincial Committee – as well as that of the Gansu Provincial People’s Government and the Qinghai Provincial People’s Government – along with the cadres and the local population, will stand united and overcome the impact of the disaster, in order to quickly rebuild the affected areas and restore normality.

A number of local enterprises, including Macau’s integrated resort operators, have also donated tens of millions of patacas to assist all those affected by the temblor in the two provinces.

According to state media reports, as of last Wednesday, authorities reported 131 deaths and 782 injuries in Gansu, while neighbouring Qinghai recorded 31 deaths and almost 200 people injured.
