A fire broke out in a ward on the third floor of the inpatient building of the public Conde de São Januário Hospital Centre early Saturday morning, Judiciary Police (PJ) spokesman Leng Kam Lon said in a statement on Saturday.
According to the statement, no one was injured or required hospitalisation in the suspected arson.
The Fire Services Bureau (CB) was notified at around 2 a.m. on Saturday that a hospital bed had caught fire, but when the firefighters arrived, the blaze had already been put out by the hospital’s security guards, the statement said.
According to the statement, a patient in the ward on the third floor had set the sheets alight with a lighter, causing the fire alarm to go off, and the hospital bed and a divider curtain were slightly burnt, which was considered a suspicious fire so the firefighters reported the case to the Judiciary Police.
The statement said that police officers called to the scene found that the bed sheets, pillows, bed frame and mattress were scorched, the statement said.
The hospital’s fire system was operating normally, according to the Fire Services Bureau.
The Judiciary Police have classified the case as suspected arson.
