New Delhi – Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Timor-Leste’s President José Ramos-Horta have agreed to create synergies among Global South countries on global issues, diplomatic sources said on Tuesday.
During a meeting on Tuesday in Gandhinagar, capital of western India’s state of Gujarat, Modi and Ramos-Horta pledged to strengthen bilateral ties and continue their excellent cooperation in the multilateral arena, according to a statement by India’s Foreign Ministry.
Modi reaffirmed India’s commitment to building a vibrant relationship between the two governments, the statement said, adding that he also offered to assist Timor-Leste in developing capacity and human resources, information technology (IT), finance, energy, and health, including traditional medicine and pharmaceuticals.
Ramos-Horta, in turn, requested India’s cooperation in achieving its development priorities, particularly in healthcare and IT capacity development, and expressed strong support for New Delhi’s intentions to become a permanent member of the UN Security Council.
Accompanied by a delegation, Ramos-Horta is visiting India until today to attend the 10th Vibrant Gujarat Global Summit in Gandhinagar, the first-ever head of state or government-level visit between both nations.
Timor-Leste is East Timor’s official Portuguese name.
