The Macau Legislative Assembly (AL) yesterday passed a government-drafted bill allowing residents to complete their car registration online.

Some lawmakers pointed out that although registering a car is electronic from now on, the registration and registration procedures are still processed by two bureaus separately, namely the Transport Bureau (DSAT) and the Commercial Registry Office (CRCBM),and they asked whether the government has a timetable to simplify the administrative procedures.

Secretary for Administration and Justice André Cheong Weng Chon attended yesterday’s plenary session when the bill was voted on article-by-article in its second and final reading.

Cheong admitted that the law amendments were only “half done”. However, Cheong said he believed that the integration of data between bureaus through electronic means could make residents feel as if they were going through the procedures in one bureau only, adding that the government will integrate the process in the future, and asked civil society to “give us some more time”.

The law states that in future, when a resident submits an application for a motor vehicle registration to the Transport Bureau and completes the registration of their motor vehicle, the bureau will notify the Commercial Registry Office of the resident’s relevant information documents by data interchange, and the resident will be deemed to have submitted the registration request by simply paying the registration handling fee online.

The new law will take effect on February 1.
