A local woman and a male university student from the mainland have separately fallen victim to “fake police” scams, resulting in total losses of 1.2 million patacas, Judiciary Police (PJ) spokesman Chan Wun Man said at a regular press conference yesterday.

According to Chan, earlier this month, the local female victim received a call on her mobile phone from an individual who identified himself as a “Macau Immigration Department officer.” The caller claimed that her mainland phone number was involved in the dissemination of fraudulent advertisements. Subsequently, the phone call was first passed on to an officer claiming to be from the “Guangzhou Public Security Bureau” and later to a “prosecutor.” The scammers instructed her to provide her bank account information and transfer money to a Hong Kong account belonging to the “Hong Kong Independent Commission Against Corruption” (ICAC) for fund verification.

The local victim followed their instructions and ended up losing HK$520,000. Chan also noted that a similar scam occurred involving the student who lost HK$500,000.
