The executive committee of the Guangdong-Macau In-depth Cooperation Zone in Hengqin held this year’s first regular meeting on Monday, which concluded that it will soon announce proposals for new measures aiming to promote the zone’s technological innovation, according to a statement published on the zone’s official website yesterday.

The meeting was chaired by Secretary for Economy and Finance Lei Wai Nong, who heads the zone’s executive committee.

The statement said that the executive committee will soon consult “various segments of civil society” about its proposed new measures.

The zone was inaugurated in September 2021.

The Guangdong-Macau In-depth Cooperation Zone’s top decision-making body is its administrative committee, which is jointly headed by Guangdong Governor Wang Weizhong and Macau Chief Executive Ho Iat Seng.

The zone’s executive committee, which is run under the administrative committee, is the body tasked with the zone’s daily functioning and execution of tasks.

According to the statement, the meeting discussed the zone’s proposed new measures to promote the development of the zone’s technological innovation as well as strategies aiming to ensure the measures’ effective implementation.

The statement said that the zone’s executive committee has drafted the proposed measures in compliance with the Master Plan of the Development of the Guangdong-Macau In-depth Cooperation Zone in Hengqin, which was released in September 2021, aiming to implement strategies to promote innovation-driven development by integrating the current condition of the zone’s technological innovation.

Consequently, according to the statement, the proposed new measures will put special emphasis on six main aspects, namely cultivating and attracting innovative or growing tech companies, strengthening cooperation with Macau on the creation of a technological-innovation platform, resolving existing difficulties hindering technological innovation, the transformation of research achievements, strengthening international cooperation on scientific and technological development, and creating high-quality environment for technological innovation.

The statement underlined that the proposed new measures aim to enable the in-depth cooperation zone to become an important hub supporting the ongoing development of the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macau Greater Bay Area (GBA) as an international innovation and technology centre, which would then help Macau achieve its appropriate economic diversification.

Moreover, according to the statement, the meeting also concluded that the in-depth cooperation zone needs to transform the central government’s special support measures into a continuous increase in its productivity more quickly.
